The studies typically last from one to two hours, and participants are compensated nicely for their time. The last study we assembled for Oracle gave participants a $100 American Express gift card.

The studies are done remotely on home computers, etc.
If you happen to live near a client's location then on rare occasions you will be contacted to do a study on site. However, studies are only completed as participants have the time to do so. There isn't any obligation to do studies once you become a participant.
