Hi all, I was wondering if someone can share his approch for salary negociation. I work with the same company for 8 years, for the past 6 years I have been their customer service supervisor. I am now planning to ask for title change to customer service manager and an increase in my salary. how do you think I should go about this and what salary should I ask for.
thanks all
Khadija

Hi,
First congrats for being with the same company for eight years. You've obviously been a valuable resource for them. In preparing for the meeting, make a list of all the things that have been done in the past six years under your supervision, showing as many measurable items as possible. You should also make a list of goals you have for the next year as the manager of the department, again make sure they are measurable. If you get regular raises each year then a 5-7% increase is reasonable and if you haven't been getting the increases then 10% or so is a fair percentage. Good luck!

oh! god, very good decesion....please go ahead with all the details and acheivement yuo had done for the last 8 yrs. don't be late before a manger comes upon your head. Money wise please go and discuss with other manager how much they are been paid. You can take a rise of 20% if you are getting regular rise.
Good luck

Hello kjambari,

8 years is a pretty long time to work for the same company and more so - 06 years in the same position. But it does give you an edge over others in terms of stability' - something which the HR guys always look out for. Ideally I would see an increase in salary of about 8 - 10 % annually. But again, moving from a supervisor position to a managerial position would put you in a totally different pay-scale altogether. You would have to do a bit of research on this, though, because when you are discussiing your promotion and your salary you don't want to be seen out-of-touch with the market.

Visit some job sites - look at the salaries currently being offerred for the position you are looking at. Or some websites like www.payscale.com might also help. Today, information is just a google away!

You also would have to keep in mind that most of the markets are not in very good shape these days and it might take it a while to recover. So, this might not be a time when you can expect a dramatic hike in your salary, even if you get that promotion. So, my suggestion to you would be only this - Do your homework and tread with caution ! But it's definitely high time you moved to the next position - if not in this company, in some other company !

All the best

Johnny
