At the time that my business unit was a fledgling, I conducted several away-from-the-office-over-lunch sessions where the entire team was charged with writing a mission statement to support the corporate vision, then developing objectives to support the mission. It worked very well because it was a small team at that time and everyone had a stake in it. It personalized the business for them.
The two-fer outcome was the ultimate growth of the team. As new members came on board, the 'founding' members trained in their new teammates, and they did so passionately. After all, it was THEIR work that they were supporting.
I also regularly publish achievements by individual members that support the overall vision, seek out external events that support the initiative (seminars, books, stage productions, etc.), and reward employees who continually strive for improvement.
