Nationwide Claims Top Spot for Customer Service as Financial Sector Overtakes Retail

Nationwide Building Society has been named the UK’s leading brand for customer service, securing a score of 87.3 out of 100 in the latest UK Customer Satisfaction Index (UKCSI).

The results mark a significant milestone for the financial services industry. For the first time since 2008, banks and building societies have collectively outperformed the retail sector in customer service rankings. This shift follows a period of intensive transformation within the sector, driven by heavy investment in digital technology, enhanced staff training programs, and heightened market competition.

Industry experts also point to the influence of the Financial Conduct Authority’s (FCA) Consumer Duty rules, which have mandated a higher standard of care and clearer communications across the financial landscape.

While the report indicates that overall customer satisfaction in the UK has risen for the fourth consecutive period, there are signs that this momentum may be plateauing. The rate of improvement has slowed significantly over the last six months, suggesting that brands are finding it increasingly difficult to deliver marginal gains in a challenging economic environment.

Furthermore, a confidence gap is emerging. Despite the measurable improvements in service delivery, consumer confidence remains on the decline. Fewer individuals report feeling financially better off, and a growing number of consumers now consider it an inopportune time to commit to major purchases.
