8×8 has announced the early availability of 8×8 AI Studio, a native development environment designed to allow organizations to build, test, and deploy AI agents directly within its CX platform.
The tool utilizes natural language instructions, enabling non-technical teams to create conversational AI agents without the need for specialist developers or lengthy implementation cycles.
The move addresses common industry hurdles, such as high professional services costs and the complexity of integrating third-party AI tools into existing communications infrastructure. By embedding the development environment directly into the 8×8 Platform for CX, the company aims to bridge the gap between AI strategy and execution.
Market data suggests a growing preference for bespoke AI solutions. According to the Metrigy Customer Experience Optimization 2025-26 report, nearly three-quarters of CX leaders prefer building their own AI agents over purchasing off-the-shelf products, citing a need for better trust and domain-specific expertise.
Sheila McGee-Smith, President & Principal Analyst at McGee-Smith Analytics, said:
“Many companies — especially mid-sized ones — have held back deploying AI agents because of the cost of specialized developers and months of integration work. 8×8 built AI Studio natively on infrastructure its customers already operate so no intricate integration is required. A business user can describe what they want an agent to do in natural language, and the native Builder creates it, including the ability to take real action such as scheduling appointments or filing tickets. This combination of accessibility for non-technical teams and the flexibility to expand into agentic workflows on a single platform is what will allow companies to transform AI from a concept to repeatable outcomes.”
Unlike legacy conversational AI that often requires middleware, 8×8 AI Studio includes a “Builder” that allows users to move from a concept to a live agent across voice and digital channels in a matter of minutes. During the early availability phase, dozens of customers across 15 verticals have already deployed agents for tasks ranging from sales qualification and appointment scheduling to internal helpdesk triage.
Hunter Middleton, Chief Product Officer at 8×8, Inc., commented:
“8×8 AI Studio is not an AI layer sitting on top of a communications platform, it’s AI embedded in the infrastructure itself. The LLM has direct access to real-time voice data, network telemetry, and the full interaction context that external tools typically cannot access. That direct access also eliminates the transcription intermediaries responsible for the latency and drop-offs that destroy the natural conversation experience on older architectures. That is what separates AI that demos well from AI that holds up at production scale.”
8×8 AI Studio is currently available to 8×8 customers with no additional licensing requirements for access. The company is offering a free tier for building and testing, with consumption-based fees applying once agents are moved into production.
