Zoom Introduces Unified Context Layer to Connect Conversations

Zoom has unveiled a Unified Context Layer, designed to link conversations with relevant documents and data and help people and AI agents turn business context into follow-up actions.

Announced at the company’s annual Zoomtopia customer conference, the layer draws on near real-time activity across Zoom and connected third-party applications. Configurable access controls are intended to help organizations manage how that information is used, while AI agents can use the combined context to generate insights and coordinate work.

Zoom says the technology is intended to address the fragmentation that occurs when customer interactions move between meetings, phone calls, chats and other systems. When details are spread across those channels, employees and AI tools may lack a complete record of previous discussions and decisions.

The Unified Context Layer is part of a broader set of AI product announcements spanning Zoom Workplace, customer experience, developer tools and events. Zoom positioned the releases as part of its effort to help organizations move from conversations to completed tasks.

“AI models are only as powerful as their understanding of your business, and that context makes all the difference. Fragmented product experiences isolate conversations, stall decisions, and drag businesses down. Today, with the Unified Context Layer, we’re laying the groundwork for a system of action designed to turn conversations into completed work.”

Christine Sarros, senior vice president of Enterprise Engineering, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, added:

“Our teams have the information they need, but it’s often dispersed across meetings, notes, and different systems. Zoom’s new solutions could help bring that context together, so teams can enter customer conversations with a clearer understanding of what’s been discussed, what’s been decided, and what needs to happen next. We see an opportunity to spend less time reconstructing history and more time helping our customers move forward.”

Zoom reported that its Virtual Agent customer count has increased by 256%. The company also said users of its AI tools complete tasks twice as fast, with 72% reporting high or extremely high business impact, compared with a cited market average of 63%. Zoom expects to exceed $5 billion in annual revenue this year.

For CX teams

For customer service and experience teams, a shared context layer could help reduce the effort spent searching for interaction history and repeating questions when customers move between channels. Its value will depend on how reliably it connects data across systems, how well it respects permissions and privacy requirements, and whether insights can be acted on within existing workflows.

If those elements work together, the approach could support more consistent service and smoother handoffs between human agents and AI; if not, it risks adding another layer to an already complex technology environment.
